dominions on the continent of America, in which, from a variety of interes-
ting documents and of rational deductions, he found himself suthorised to
state the number of inhabitants at nos less than 18,000,000. We have in our
hands a very curious document on the population of New Spain, which we
think highly worthy of being communicated to the public, (337) not only on
account of the direct information it contains, but for the data which it affords
for drawing accurate conclusions respecting other parts of American domi-
nions. The document to which we allude is a letter from Clavigero, the cele-
brated author of the History of Mexico, writtem from Italy to Viscardo, then in
London, in answer to certain questions which this gentleman has addressed to
Clavigero and the rest of his brethren in Italy. For the authenticity of the letter
we are qualified to vouch. The following is a very literal translation ...

336... Entre los papeles de Viscardo había uno, desafortunadamente
ahora no en nuestro poder, que contiene una disertación sobre la población
de los dominios españoles en el continente de América, en la cual, gracias a
cierta variedad de documentos interesantes y de deducciones racionales se
encontró autorizado a establecer el número de los habitantes en no menos de
18.000.000. Tenemos en nuestras manos un documento muy curioso sobre la
población de la Nueva España que pensamos vale la pena sin duda comunicar
al público (337) no solamente por el informe directo que contiene sino por los
datos que ofrece para sacar conclusiones seguras respecto a otras partes de los
dominios americanos.
El documento a que aludimos es una carta de Clavigero, el célebre
autor de la Historia de México, escrita desde Italia a Viscardo, entonces en
Londres, para contestar a ciertas preguntas que este señor había dirigido a
Clavigero y a los demás cofrades en Italia.
