PRESENTATION
The Museum of the Inquisition and of the Congress that is located on the old premises of the National Senate, was created on July 26th 1968. It has the mission of preserving and publicizing Peruvian cultural heritage in its custody, highlighting the importance and significance of the Congress of the Republic in our national history.
The Museum is one of the main museums of the country, the most visited and one of the global leading museums of the world regarding the quality of its services. It operates in one of the most renown and old buildings of the city, which has been declared a national monument. As a matter of fact, the history of this building dates back to the time of the foundation of Lima.
This old construction is part of the cultural heritage of the country, and even more, of the world. Besides, it has been related to the Congress of the Republic since the early days of the First Constituent Congress of Peru, when its rooms not only served for the meetings of the Chamber of Deputies, but also even housed several of its Members. Later it was the seat of the National Senate till 1939, when that chamber started sitting in the Legislative Palace. Shortly after, the Public Library of the Chamber of Deputies (1943) and finally, the Congress Museum (1968-to date) also worked there.
As to the visit of the general public to tour its rooms, it has been considered the most visited museum of Peru for nine consecutive years. In 2006, it received 240,690 people, while from 1992 to 2006, it received 3’043,409 visitors.
In recent past years, the Museum of the Inquisition and of the Congress focused its activities on research, preservation, exhibition, and publicity efforts inherent to contemporary museums, prioritising research in order to disseminate the history of the Congress of Peru, and its cultural legacy, and provide new services to Internet users who tour our website.
Among the works on history research, it should be noted the essential piece of research done with the compilation, transcription, and on-site publication of all the presidential addresses of our history, including the speeches given by all the Presidents of the Republic, or those in charge of the Executive Power before the Parliament; the addresses by de-facto rulers on occasion of the national holidays, and the coup manifestos, as well as the speeches by the congressional presidents when they were delivered on occasion of the reopening of congress after a de-facto dissolution, or when the constitutional order was re-established, or to commemorate a historical event that was significant to the Legislature.
We hope your tour of the website for the Museum of the Inquisition and of the Congress has been useful to you, and we invite your comments via the electronic mail of the Museum:
